GGP 5th Year Follow-up Visit to Koror State Recycling Center
2026/2/19

On February 18, 2026, the Embassy of Japan had the pleasure of meeting with Mr. Selby P. Etibek, Koror State Government Solid Waste Management Office (SWMO) Manager, at Koror State Recycling Center in Koror. The visit was conducted as part of the fifth-year follow-up for “The Project for Reconstruction of Koror State Recycling Center.”
Through the Government of Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP), SWMO received a new wood chipper and paper shredder in September 2018. The grant totaled USD 136,066.
In Koror State, waste management has long been a challenge due to the population’s reliance on imported goods. The wood chipper and paper shredder provided through this GGP project have played an important role in supporting the resumption of operations at the Recycling Center.
Five years after their introduction, these machines continue to operate effectively under the efficient management of on-site staff. The equipment support waste reduction, public hygiene, and disease prevention, while contributing to Palau’s environmental protection efforts as a tourism-driven nation.
Japan’s GGP was launched in Palau in 1999 to address grassroots development needs, including education, healthcare, and community welfare. This assistance marked the 69th project out of 105 GGP projects in Palau.
