Japan Hands Over New Machineries to Koror State Recycling Center
On September 26, 2018, Deputy Chief of Mission Takeshi Ogino from the Embassy of Japan formally handed over a new wood chipper and paper shredder to Koror State Recycling Center. The handover ceremony for “The Project for Reconstruction of Koror State Recycling Center” was held at the center. The ceremony was attended by Koror State Governor Franco Gibbons, Koror State Legislature Speaker Alan Marbou, Solid Waste Management Consultant Katsuo Fuji and other related personnel.
Koror State Recycling Center is one of the important facilities which succeeded to produce diesel oil from waste plastic by using liquefaction system. However, an accidental fire occurred last year and destroyed the whole composting facility. To reconstruct the center, the Embassy of Japan decided to provide assistance to Koror State Recycling Center through GGP, and granted the wood chipper and paper shredder valued $136,066.
Now that the new wood chipper and paper shredder became available, the composting facility of Koror State Recycling Center is ready for full operation and the amount of waste disposal is expected to be reduced.
At the ceremony, Deputy Chief of Mission Ogino expressed his hope that the implementation of this project would lead to further development of Koror State Recycling Center and Palauan people.
The Government of Japan launched GGP in 1999, for the purpose of responding to various development needs engaged in grassroots activities in Palau. As of September 26, 2018, the Embassy has signed 71 grant contracts with schools and hospitals as well as state governments and non-profit organizations. Education, health care and environment are the primary fields prioritized by Japan for GGP in order to contribute to sustainable development of Palau.
