GGP 5th Year Follow-up Visit to Northern Reef Fisheries Cooperative
2025/12/15

On December 11, 2025, the Embassy of Japan had the pleasure of meeting with the Hon. Roydan Renguul, Speaker of the Kayangel State Legislature and Board Officer of Northern Reef Fisheries Cooperative (NRCF), and Mr. Howard Keizi, NRFC’s Boat Operator, at the Ollei port in Ngarchelong to conduct the 5th-year follow-up visit for “The Project for Procurement of Boat for Northern Reef Fisheries Cooperative.”
Through the Government of Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects(GGP), NRFC received a 25-foot boat and trailer made possible through a USD $51,394 grant in June 2020.
Five years later, the Embassy is pleased to share that the boat and trailer remain in excellent condition and are well maintained. We learned that the boat continues to play an essential role in the northern community as the sole
means to transport fish catch between Kayangel and Ngarchelong, It transports approximately 400-600 lbs of catch per trip, and as a secondary effect, it brings back essential supplies for people of Kayangel on its return trip.
The Embassy remains committed to supporting the sustainable management of Palau’s marine resources and hopes that NRFC continues to benefit from the boat for many years to come.
Japan’s GGP was launched in Palau in 1999 to address grassroots development needs, including education, healthcare, and community welfare. This assistance marked the 79th project out of 105 GGP projects in Palau.
