Special Advisor to the Prime Minister Sonoura’s visit to Palau
From August 25 to 27 Mr. Kentaro Sonoura, Special Advisor to the Prime Minister, visited Palau with Mr. Kozaburo Nishime, Member of House of Representatives and officials from the Fisheries Agency and Japan Tourism Agency. Overview is as follows:
1. Courtesy Call on President Remengesau
(1) In the morning of August 26th, Mr. Sonoura made a courtesy visit to H.E. Tommy E Remengesau, Jr., President of the Republic of Palau.
(2) Mr. Sonoura stated that the high official visits including Minister Kono’s visit in the early August show the development of the friendship between Japan and Palau. He also stated that this year is the 25th Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Palau and expressed his hope to further strengthen the relations between the two countries.
(3) In response, President Remengesau welcomed Mr. Sonoura expressing his appreciation for Japan’s longstanding assistance to Palau and cooperation for 2020 Our Ocean Conference, and wished the further development, including the field of tourism, of the relationship between Japan and Palau.
(4) Mr. Nishime stated that Japan would like to cooperate with Palau in the field of fishery even further.
2. Courtesy Call on Vice President Oilouch
In the morning of August 26th, Mr. Sonoura made a courtesy visit to Hon. Raynold B. Oilouch, Vice President of the Republic of Palau/Minister of Justice. They exchanged views about a variety of issues such as maritime security, tourism and fishery, and agreed on continual cooperation with each other in order to achieve ‘Free and Open Indo-Pacific’.
3. Meeting with Minister Marugg of Minister of State of the Republic of Palau
In the morning of August 26th, Mr. Sonoura held a meeting with Hon. Faustina K. Rehuher-Marugg, Minister of State of the Republic of Palau. They exchanged views about regional affairs as well as a variety of issues such as tourism and people-to-people exchange. In addition, they agreed on close coordination with each other for 2020 Our Ocean Conference and the stable operation of Japan fishing boats.
4. Meeting with Minister Sengebau of the Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment & Tourism
In the afternoon of August 26th, Mr. Sonoura held a meeting with Hon. Fleming Umiich Sengebau, Minister of Natural Resources, Environment and Tourism. They discussed the cooperation for the stable operation of Japan fishing boats, 2020 Our Ocean Conference and tourism, and agreed on continual cooperation with each other for these fields. In addition, Mr. Nishime stated that Japan would like to cooperate with Palau in the field of fishery even further.
5. Handover Ceremony of the New School Bus for the Ministry of Education
In the afternoon of August 26th, Mr. Sonoura attended a handover ceremony of the new school bus for the Ministry of Education together with Hon. Sinton Soalablai, Minister of Education. In Palau, students living in a distant place have difficulty of transportation because the number of buses is limited across the country. It is expected that providing the school bus will improve the condition of the educational environment of the Palauan students.
