2025/6/18

On June 16th, crew of the JMSDF destroyer ‘Yahagi’, currently port calling in Palau, and the JGSDF held a cultural exchange with students at Maris Stella Elementary School.

🥁Wa-daiko Performance
The exchange started with a powerful wa-daiko (traditional Japanese drum) by the GMSDF. After the performance, the students experienced wa-daiko drumming and were amazed at the big sound it produced.

🏃Mini-Undōkai
In the latter half of the event, a ‘Mini-Undōkai’ was held by JICA volunteers. ‘Undōkai’, which means sports event, is used as part of Palauan language as well. In joint teams of Maris Stella students and JGSDF/JGSDF crew, the participants competed in plastic bottle relay race, jump rope, and tug of war!

With full of joy and sweat, this 2hour event became an opportunity to enhance cultural and athletic exchange between Japan and Palau.
