MAFE and JICA Signs a Record of Discussion to Launch a New Cooperation in Fisheries Industry Development

On April 4, 2025, Ambassador ORIKASA Hiroyuki, witnessed the signing of a Record of Discussion on fisheries industry development between Hon. Steven Victor, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and the Environment and Mr. AOKI Tsunenori, Chief Representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Palau Office.
The signing, which was witnessed by President Surangel Whipps Jr. and Ambassador Orikasa, will form the basis for the planning process of the “Project for Formulating a Master Plan for Fisheries Industry Development” which will commence this summer.
The Master Plan aims to support the sustainable development of Palau’s fisheries industry in conjunction with other industries and will include an analysis of the economic and environmental feasibility of developing a new fishing port, as well as capacity building for MAFE to implement such a development plan. According to MAFE, the mid-term report including consideration of the fishing port development plan will be submitted by July 2026.
