Japanese Nutritionists Shine at the 30th Mechesil Belau Conference 2023

2023/10/4

As part of the 30th Mechesil Belau Conference (October 3-5, 2023), two volunteers from Japan International cooperation Agency (JICA) took centre stage to discuss healthy diet on October 4, 2023. Ms. TSUBURA Chiako, from the Food Service Program, Ministry of Education, and Ms. FUNAKI Norie, from the NCD Unit, Division of Primary and Preventive Health, Bureau of Public Health, presented an insightful booklet titled “Healthy Breakfast Recipe Book.” This booklet features nutritionally balanced breakfast recipes using locally sourced ingredients in Palau.

Kicking off the presentation was Ms. TATSUKI Mayu, Researcher/Advisor at the Embassy of Japan. In her opening remarks, Ms. Tatsuki emphasised the profound impact of health and nutrition not only on individual concerns but also on the very foundation of communities, societies and nation. “The well-being of women forms the basis on which the future of Palau rests,” she added. Many in the audience were nodding in approval.

As the next year celebrates the 30th anniversary of Palau's independence and the establishment of Japan-Palau diplomatic relations, cultural exchange between the two countries continues to flourish. The JICA nutritionists’ contribution to the 30th Mechesil Belau Conference is yet another example of partnership between Japan and Palau.

Complimentary copies of the “Healthy Breakfast Recipe Book” are available at the JICA office in Koror or visit the JICA Palau Facebook to get the digital version of the booklet.
