2026/7/10

On July 10, 2026, a handover ceremony was held at the Bureau of Fisheries in Malakal to mark the successful completion of Japan's two Grant Aid Projects under the Economic and Social Development Programme, through which 81 navigation aids, a maintenance vessel, and an anchor winch were provided to the Government of Palau. The two projects, totaling 550 million yen (approximately 4.5 million dollars), aim to enhance maritime safety and the maintenance capacity of the Bureau of Marine Transportation, Ministry of Public Infrastructure and Industries (MPII), within Palauan waters.
Mr. ONO Shunsuke, Chargé d'Affaires ad interim of the Embassy of Japan, officially transferred the assets to Director Hayes Moses, who accepted the equipment on behalf of the MPII. In his remarks, Mr. ONO highlighted the significance of the projects, stating: "As an island nation blessed with beautiful and expansive waters, Palau's maritime safety is of paramount importance to the daily lives of its people and the continued growth of its economy."
The completed projects deliver critical infrastructure that will continuously benefit the Palauan people. The navigation aids ensure safer passage through territorial waters, while the maintenance vessel and anchor winch equip the Bureau to independently maintain remote coastal infrastructure and transport routes, strengthening the overall maritime safety framework in Palauan waters.
