Palauan-style Baseball with MEXT Scholarship Alumni

2026/6/29

On Saturday, June 27, 2026, a Palauan-style Baseball(iyakyu) event was held with MEXT scholarship alumni at Asahi Baseball Field.

Palauan-style baseball is a traditional Palauan sport played with a bamboo stick as a bat and a tennis ball. It features a unique set of rules in which there is only one base, and a point is scored by the batter running to the base and back after hitting the ball. With minimal equipment and facilities required, it is a sport that anyone can easily enjoy regardless of age or gender, and one that vividly reflects Palauan culture.

This event was held with the aim of deepening the friendly relations between Japan and Palau, as well as providing MEXT scholarship alumni with an opportunity to give back to Palauan society by sharing the experiences and bonds they cultivated during their studies in Japan. Approximately 10 participants competed under the unique Palauan rules, and the event was filled with smiles and lively interaction.

The Embassy will continue to work in collaboration with the MEXT scholarship alumni network to support activities that promote people-to-people exchanges between Japan and Palau.
