In the opening remarks, Embassy of Japan’s Deputy Chief of Mission Mr. ONO Shunsuke, mentioned that Palau and Japan have a very long history which can be seen in some of the shared cultures including language. In order for the younger generation to not forget that bond, the Embassy of Japan and many organizations such as APIC are working on promoting educational and cultural exchanges to further enhance the connection between Palau and Japan.
Mr. Yaoch shared about his experience including his impression of Japan and how modernity and tradition co-exists, the beautiful architecture, the world renowned hospitality of the people, the unique culture, and the amazing cuisine. He also shared about what he learned through the various classes and excursions that enriched his understanding and broadened his perspective in life. He emphasized the deep sense of familiarity he felt, which made his journey even more meaningful.
Mr. Yaoch remarked, “I felt very much at home… from the cuisine to the culture, it felt so familiar.” He noticed that he could understand some Japanese words because many terms are also used in Palauan such as “senpuki” and “omedeto”. He encouraged everyone to embrace such opportunities for connection and learning. Mr. Quinlan Yaoch’s presentation not only served as an inspiration to those in attendance but highlighted the importance of people to people exchanges between Japan and Palau.
As the year marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Palau, we hope that these opportunities and exchanges continue to strengthen the bond between Japan and Palau.
