On August 12th, Ms. Britchet Techekii Idelkei gave a presentation at the Embassy of Japan about her experience as a participant in the APIC Pacific Islands and West Indies Student Invitational’s Summer Session in East Asian Studies Program. The Association for the Promotion of International Cooperation (APIC) facilitates various programs aimed at promoting and enhancing international ties, as well as deepening mutual understanding between Japan and countries around the world.

Ms. Idelkei spent nearly a month in Japan, attending Sophia University in Tokyo, where she participated in a range of classes and activities focused on East Asian culture and society. She shared insights into her daily routine and reflected on highlights from the program, which included learning about traditional Japanese tea ceremonies and forming lasting friendships with other international students.

Throughout the program, she gained both academic knowledge and personal growth. One important lesson she took away was the value of self-discipline and patience. She especially developed these qualities during the tea ceremony sessions. While many students found the process challenging, Ms. Idelkei embraced it. By the final examination, her professor expressed how impressed they were with her performance.

Outside the classroom, one of the most memorable parts of her trip was the friendships she formed. Her international classmates played a significant role in shaping her experience as they explored Tokyo together, went shopping, and took part in cultural excursions to places like Asakusa, Sawara, and Yokohama.

Ms. Idelkei concluded her presentation by emphasizing that it’s not just the activities or sites that make an exchange program meaningful, but also the people. She noted how considerate and respectful Japanese people were, and explained that this was something she hopes to bring back to Palau. As Palau becomes increasingly diverse, she believes it is important to carry forward the values of respect and mutual understanding that she experienced during her time in Japan.
