2025/7/18

On July 16, officials from the Embassy of Japan had the honor of attending an informative mine action workshop hosted by Norwegian People's Aid (NPA), led by Country Director Ms. Melissa Andersson and Operations Manager Mr. Roger Hess.

During the session, attendees learned firsthand about the vital work NPA carries out in Palau to locate, retrieve, and safely dispose of unexploded ordnance (UXO) and explosive remnants from World War II. From detailed explanations of the types of munitions found in Palau to the meticulous procedures and challenges of safe disposal, the workshop highlighted the care and expertise that go into making Palau safer for its communities.

Following the presentation, guests toured NPA’s Central Disposal Site in Melekeok, where they were given a demonstration on how UXOs are identified using advanced portable X-ray systems, along with cutting techniques developed by Mr. Hess, who brings over 40 years of experience in the field.

The essential work being done by NPA, in collaboration with the Japan Action Mine Service (JMAS), combines technical expertise with a clear humanitarian purpose. Their ongoing efforts to remove these dangerous remnants of war directly support the safety and well-being of the Palauan people.
