5-year follow-up visit on Japan's Grassroots Grant Assistance to Palau Red Cross Society
2025/5/28

In July 2020, the Palau Red Cross Society (PRCS) received support from the Embassy of Japan, made possible through the Grassroots Grant Projects (GGP) program. Under “The Project for Enhancing Community Resilience in Palau,” a grant of $70,249 USD was provided to empower PRCS in its mission to improve disaster preparedness and emergency response capabilities across the island nation.
With this funding, PRCS was able to procure a Toyota Tacoma pick-up truck, two Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs), three hand-held radios, a satellite phone, and essential repair materials for their equipment storage facility. These items have played a key role in strengthening the organization’s daily operations and emergency response volunteer training efforts.
The Embassy conducted its 5th-year follow-up visit to PRCS to assess the condition and usage of the items provided. We are pleased to report that all equipment remains in excellent working condition and continues to be used effectively to serve the Palauan community.
The Toyota Tacoma pick-up truck remains in excellent condition and is regularly maintained. It is used daily to support operational activities—transporting goods, reaching remote areas in Babeldaob where some roads are unpaved, and assisting in the field with its reliable winch, which has proven crucial for recovering vehicles in difficult terrain.
The hand-held radios are currently being lent to the Palau National Olympic Committee (PNOC) for their Medical Incident Management Training in preparation for the upcoming Pacific Mini Games scheduled to be held from June 29 through July 9, demonstrating how the equipment continues to benefit not only PRCS but also the wider community. The two AEDs remain in good working condition, regularly used in training exercises and kept on standby for emergency situations where they could prove lifesaving. Additionally, the satellite phone—still the only one in PRCS’s inventory—continues to be an essential communication tool during disasters or whenever conventional networks are unavailable, ensuring reliable coordination in even the most challenging circumstances.
In addition to this project, we are also pleased to have supported PRCS through the GGP in the construction of their Emergency Relief Supplies Warehouse and Training Center in Ngebudel, Airai, which is fully operational and actively supporting their disaster preparedness efforts. We are proud to witness the continued positive impact of this partnership and commend the Palau Red Cross Society for their dedication to community safety and resilience.
The Government of Japan’s GGP was launched in Palau in 1999, with the aim of addressing grassroots development needs, such as education, healthcare, and public welfare.
