On May 8, 2025, Ambassador ORIKASA Hiroyuki attended the Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) Advisory Committee/Technical Working Group Meeting as an observer.

The Honourable Gustav Aitaro, Minister of State, who serves as the Chairman of the Committee, extended his congratulations to the Norwegian People's Aid for their ongoing efforts. In addition, he extended his congratulations to the Japan Mine Action Service (JMAS) on their success in removing the explosive remnants of war (ERW) from the Helmet Wreck in Malakal.

The UXO Committee was established in 2017 with the aim of creating a Palau's UXO Action Standard, guided by the International Mine Action Standards, and of taking the necessary steps to identify and address the challenges in order to implement such standards in its effort to remove and safely dispose of UXO in Palau.

“It has been eighty years since the World War Two, but the effects of the fierce battles still affect people’s lives and Palau’s economic and social development. Although there is a limit to manpower and funding, I know that through increased communication and understanding we can address some of the challenges, and I am delighted to be able to attend this important meeting,” said Ambassador Orikasa.

The next meeting is expected to be held in three months.
