On January 27, 2025, a team from JICA, academia and private sector partners involved in the Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) project visited Ambassador ORIKASA Hiroyuki.

OTEC is a system that combines a stable supply of renewable energy supply with the use of deep sea water for various commercial activities, including aquaculture, agriculture, and cosmetics production. In Kumejima, an island with a population of 7,000 in Okinawa, the OTEC project was first introduced in 2013, and is currently working to expand its capacity.

JICA plans to implement the first phase of OTEC in Palau around 2026, while working with the Government of Palau to promote OTEC-related private investment.
