On August 19, 2024, Ambassador ORIKASA Hiroyuki, and Honorable Gustav Aitaro, Minister of State signed and exchanged notes concerning a grant project of up to JPY 2,793,000,000 (approximately USD 20 Million) for the Reconstruction of Minato Bridge, which connects Malakal Island and Koror Island.

“Sustainable infrastructure supports the entire nation of a country. When properly maintained, it can serve as a symbol of strength for many generations to come. The Japan-Palau Friendship Bridge and Meyuns Causeway are clear examples of this,” said Ambassador Orikasa at the ceremony.

“This project will build a new bridge to replace the existing bridge built in 1979. The new bridge will have far-reaching benefits for the people of Palau, as it will safely connect the country’s only commercial port with the rest of the country.  Furthermore, the project was designed and will be implemented with the principle of no one is left behind. We, the stakeholders of the project will ensure that the people of Palau, in all their diverse needs and interests, are represented. As Japanese residents in Palau, we are committed to strengthening Japan-Palau relations. We, the Japanese people, including approximately 270 Japanese residents in Palau, will continue to work diligently to reinforce the bonds between Japan and Palau on a daily basis,” Ambassador Orikasa continued.
