Joint Exercise between JCG and Marine Law
2024/7/2

On July 1, Japan Coast Guard (JCG) patrol vessel “TSUGARU” conducted the joint exercise off the western coast of Palau with the Palau’s patrol vessel KEDAM, Division of Maritime Safety and Fish and Wildlife Protection (DMSFWP), Ministry of Justice.
This joint exercise was followed by a recent visit to Palau last month made by JCG Academy training vessel “KOJIMA”, a testament to JCG’s continued commitments to maintain stability and realize a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP)”.
Facing mounting illegal maritime activities in Palau and this region, including illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, Japan and Palau need to prove “We are ready” to be able to address promptly those who undermine rules-based order. This joint exercise is part of those efforts to ensure the readiness and further strengthen ties between JCG and DMSFWP.
The Government of Japan will host the Tenth Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM10) in Tokyo from July 16-18, 2024, where Pacific Leaders will meet with Japan’s Prime Minister KISHIDA Fumio to discuss future visions, including climate change and peace and security, along with the 2050 Strategy. Taking this opportunity, JCG continues to promote more cooperations with Palau and like-minded partners and support capacity building to realize FOIP.
