On February 13, 2024, Mr. KANAZAWA Shigeo, Captain of the Fisheries Agency of Japan’s fisheries inspection vessel Mihama, paid a courtesy call on Honorable J. Uduch Sengebau Senior Vice President of the Republic of Palau & Minister of Justice, accompanied by Ambassador ORIKASA Hiroyuki.

The inspection vessel Mihama last came to Palau in 2019, and this is the eighth call to Palau by Japan’s fisheries inspection vessel since 2014. The vessel will be engaged in surveillance, guidance, inspection, or enforcement on Japanese fishing vessels in the Palauan Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) to ensure that vessels comply with the measures of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC).

During the courtesy call, the Vice President expressed her appreciation for the vessel’s activities in the Palauan EEZ, and listened to a presentation made by Mr. ONO Ryo, Fisheries Agency’s Inspector, on the activities of the first inspection tour, which led to a lively discussion on the subject. The vessel is now on its second and last inspection tour in the Palauan EEZ, and will be leaving Palau on February 24.
