Embassy of Japan renewed the Grant Contract with Japan’s NGO Peace Winds Japan for NCDs Prevention “Kensin” Project in Palau

On September 1, 2022, a signing ceremony for the grant “Provision of Mobile Medical Clinics and Medical Examination on a Hospital Ship, Prevention of Non-Communicable Diseases (2nd Year)” was held at the Embassy of Japan in Palau. At the ceremony, Ambassador of Japan KARASAWA Akira and Director of Program Department of Peace Winds Japan Ms. YAMAMOTO Rika signed the grant contract, witnessed by Minister of Health and Human Services Gaafar J. Uherbelau.
 
The main objective of this project is to promote kenshin, a Japanese word meaning a regular health checkup for NCDs prevention in cooperation with Ministry of Health and Human Services and State Governments. A Japanese NGO Peace Winds Japan (PWJ) started the project in March 2021 and brought the hospital ship to Palau in November 2021. In the second year, PWJ will conduct regular health checkup activities in Kayangel, Angaur, Peleliu, Sonsorol, Hatohobei and Koror by their kenshin ship. In addition, PWJ will extend their workshops for NCDs prevention in all States including Babeldaob Island. The fund from the Government of Japan for the second year project, worth 739,539 USD, will be utilized to support PWJ’s activities in Palau and improve health and quality of life of Palauan people.
 
At the ceremony, Ambassador Karasawa stated, “NCDs prevention is a critical issue for economic, social and human resources development of Palau. I hope that Japan’s fund will be effectively used for NCDs prevention and further strengthen the partnership between Japan and Palau.” Minister Uherbelau said, “The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted our needs in medical area. I appreciate the Government of Japan and Peace Winds Japan and hope this initiative will further promote our collaboration.”
