On April 12th, 2019, Opening Ceremony for Palau Mariculture Demonstration Center (PMDC) was held in Malakal, Koror State. Mr. Toshiyuki Yamada, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan in Palau, and H.E.Tommy E. Remengesau Jr., President of Republic of Palau, Paramount Chief Ibedul, Honorable F.Umiich Sengebau, Minister of Natural Resources, Environment & Tourism, Honorable Faustina K. Rehuher-Marugg, Minister of State, Honorable Hokkons Baules, President of the Senate, Honorable Sabino Anastacio, Speaker of House of Delegates, and many honorable members of Palau leadership and distinguished guests attended the ceremony.

At the ceremony, Director of Bureau of Marine Resources Remengesau, JICA Resident Representative Tachihara, Director of Bureau of Public Works Melairei and Marine expert of Overseas Fishery Cooperation Foundation of Japan (OFCF) Sone each made a speech to explain the project. On behalf of Japanese government, Ambassador Yamada delivered a speech also and wished this center would contribute to Palau’s sustainable development and would become a symbolic center to show our strong bilateral relations. After Ambassador Yamada’s remarks, President Remengesau gave a speech on behalf of Palauan government and he deeply thanked Japanese government and JICA for their assistance. He also said, “I am proud that this Center becomes the largest one in the world.  Let’s think outside of the box and make it as productive and successful as possible.” Minister Sengebau made a closing remark, expressing appreciation to Japan for this project.

Like tourism, fishery is one of the important industries in Palau, and giant clam is one of the important products in Palau. However, due to the drastically increasing number of tourists, giant clam is being overharvested and is in critical situation. Through this project, this center’s facility which had been getting old was renovated and its equipment was improved, so it is expected that the aquaculture of giant clams will be promoted including the enhancement of production and appropriate management of giant clam larva. Furthermore, this center will display many kinds of Palau’s giant clams and aquaculture activities, so many tourists are expected to visit this center. Therefore, it is hoped that this center will play an important role to promote not only fishery but also tourism.
