At the ceremony, Governor of Aimeliik Obak made an opening remarks and he wished this project would be a successful one by strongly cooperating with Palauan government and Japanese government. Chargé d’Affaires Ogino made a speech on behalf of Japanese government, and he said “Japan respects Palau’s efforts for environmental protection and sustainable development, and would like to collaborate closely with Palau by hoping this landfill project will contribute to Palau’s efforts.” After Chargé d’Affaires Ogino’s speech, JICA Resident Representative Tachihara delivered a speech and he stated that JICA would continue to work with Palau in solid waste management so that we could hand over Palau’s beautiful nature to the next generation. Vice President Oilouch gave a speech on behalf of Palauan government and he said “This project marks a significant milestone to protect Palau’s beautiful nature,” and expressed his deep gratitude to Japanese government’s generosity.  After Vice President’s remarks, Director of Bureau of Public Works Melairei explained the details of the project, and at the closing remarks, Delegate of Aimeliik State Ngemaes thanked Japan for this project.

Palau is facing challenges to manage the increasing amount of waste appropriately and minimize the impact on the environment which occur due to the tourism development. Furthermore, the existing dumpsite is reaching its capacity currently, which is a critical issue for Palau in soil waste management. Through this project which is through up to 1.3 billion Japanese Yen, approximately 13 million US dollars, the landfill will be constructed and heavy equipment related to waste management will be provided. Japan hopes that this project will improve the sanitation environment and contribute to the environmental protection of Palau.
