Japan Movie Afternoon (Report)

On November 23, 2018, the Embassy of Japan in Palau organized a film screening event to show Japanese Anime movies “Doraemon The Movie: Nobita’s Dinasaur 2006” and “POP IN Q” at the Palau High School Multi-purpose room. The Embassy also showed the Doraemon movie to elementary schools in Koror.
In Palau, there are only few entertainment centers, movie theaters and book stores, so the opportunity for Palauan people to access current information about Japan is limited. Although many children know Japanese anime such as Pokemon, Naruto and Dragon Ball, some of the US broadcasted Japanese anime uses English names for characters, so some children do not know that they are actually Japanese anime.
Doraemon is a well-known Japanese character who has been appointed as the Anime Ambassador, whose role is to spread the Japanese culture around the world. At each film showing event, Embassy staff first explained about Doraemon and his role as Anime Ambassador before the movie started. The movie was shown in Japanese language with English subtitles. Throughout the movie, some of the Palauan children noticed Japanese words that have become part of the Palauan language, such as sashimi, kosio, beroski. The classroom was filled with laughter and other emotional reactions as the children immersed themselves with Doraemon and Nobita on their adventurous journey.
We hope that these events will make Palauan children more interested in Japan through Japanese anime and comics.
