Japan Hands Over Multipurpose Center to Ngiwal State

On Thursday, June 21, 2018, Ambassador of Japan Toshiyuki Yamada formally handed over the multipurpose center to Ngiwal State. The handing over ceremony for “The Project for Construction of Multipurpose Center for Ngiwal State” was held at Ngermechau Hamlet in Ngiwal State. The ceremony was attended by High Chief Uongruos Paulus Wong, Governor Ellender Ngirameketii and other related personnel.
Through Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP), Ngiwal State was granted the construction of a multipurpose center for the total cost of $ 130,319. The state suffered heavily from typhoon Bopha in 2012 and begun relocation of houses to a higher point. In order for the people of Ngiwal to gather in a secure environment, the multipurpose center was built in the central part of the relocation area.
The center will be used daily for various community events and gatherings and allows children to come and study after school. It will also function as a shelter for the residents of Ngiwal to evacuate in case of emergencies.
At the ceremony, Ambassador Yamada expressed his wish that the new multipurpose center would be utilized effectively and contributes to further development and security of Ngiwal State and its residents.
The Government of Japan launched GGP in 1999, for the purpose of responding to various development needs engaged in grassroots activities in Palau. As of June 21, 2018, the Embassy has signed 71 grant contracts with schools and hospitals as well as state governments and non-profit organizations. Education, health care and environment are the primary fields prioritized by Japan for GGP in order to contribute to sustainable development of Palau.
