Lovely Palauan, beautiful ocean and coral reef! See you again in the near future

JICA Senior Volunteer Haruo Ueda
I came to Palau with my wife in October, 2015. Blue ocean and coral reef were incredibly beautiful, and they were much more beautiful than I expected. My first impression when I came to Palau was that there were many people whose smile was lovely.
Though I did know from some tourist guidebooks that many Japanese words and expressions became Palauan language, it did not take time for me to notice that it is true.
I, as a JICA senior volunteer, I volunteered at two places, first at Palau International Coral Reef Center (PICRC), and then at Belau National Museum (BNM).
Time flies, doesn’t it? Two years have passed, and now it is time to go back to Japan.
My line of business is marketing, and I had the same challenge at both PICRC and BNM, which was to increase number of visitors and sales at the gift shop. However, it was not so easy under the situation that the number of tourists has been decreasing since the end of 2015.
I believe they can see good result soon by continuing projects for improvement that we have being done so far.
I enjoyed volunteering at both PICRC and BNM because both places had a friendly like family atmosphere.
Researchers and staff at PICRC are working very hard for protecting this precious planet, the earth from global warming by mainly doing research for coral reef and marine life.
Staff at BNM are also working hard for maintaining the museum which has more than 60 years of history.
PICRC has the aquarium and gift shop, and BNM has gift shop and café. I hope they will continue to develop their facilities with “5 spirits” : More Attractive, More Exciting, More Educational, More Convenient and More Comfortable.
My wife and I visited many places such as Kayangel, Babeldaobu, Rock Islands, Peleliu and Angaur. Through our trip and daily life, we could learn about Palauan geography, history, culture and people, and they were all meaningful for us. Our family and many of our friends came to see us from Japan during our stay in Palau, and we could have precious memories as well.
Though my stay in Palau was only two years, I sometimes faced difficulties because Palau’s natural and living environment is different from that of Japan. However, due to my wife’s support and kindness, I could complete my volunteer work healthily and successfully in Palau. So, I’d like to say “Thank you” to my wife for always taking care of my health particularly in eating habits.
Thank you Palauan. Thank you beautiful coral reef.
Please continuously keep Pristine Paradise Palau. See you again in the near future.
Friendly yours,
Haruo Ueda
