Japan Hands Over Backhoe to Kayangel State Government
On Friday, June 28, 2017, Ambassador of Japan Toshiyuki Yamada formally handed over a long-awaited backhoe to Kayangel State Government. The handing over ceremony for “The Project for Improving Environmental Health for Kayangel” was held at Kayangel State Office in Koror. The ceremony was attended by Kayangel State Governor, Council of Chiefs, Kayangel State Speaker, and related personnel.
Through Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP), Kayangel State Government was granted one backhoe in the total cost of $63,560. Prior to this, due to Typhoon Haiyan in 2013, there have been many old rotten trees throughout the island. Furthermore, Kayangel state has not owned any heavy equipment, and been unable to remove those rotten woods.
Accordingly, the backhoe will now allow Kayangel State Government to remove old rotten woods and assist the State to provide a safe living environment for its people. This is the first time for Kayangel State Government to receive a GGP grant from Japan.
In addition to that, this project is hoped to contribute to Kayangel State to increase capacity of waste disposal by promoting separation of garbage and improving waste management system of Kayangel State.
At the ceremony, Ambassador Yamada expressed his wish that the backhoe would be well used and maintained by Kayangel State Government for a long period of time and that it would lead to further development of friendship between Japan and Palau.
