Strengthening Family and Peace through Ikebana

The Belau Tourism Association and the Embassy of Japan are jointly organizing the 3rd Ikebana “Flower Arrangement” workshop and contest, featuring the Japanese Ikebana artist Ms. Koen Yokoi (Yokoi Sensei), at Ernguul Park from April 22-23, 2017.
The art of Ikebana is a special Japanese flower arranging technique, expressing the relationship to nature using as few elements as possible, and the appreciation of flowers and plants. The main plant to be used in the flower arrangement workshop and contest is the Ti plant or “Sis” in Palauan. The theme for this year’s event is “Family and Peace”, which is based on Yokoi Sensei’s strong desire to dedicate her Ikebana skills to commemorate the 72nd anniversary of the end of WWII and to celebrate the bond of friendship between Japan and Palau. The special live performance by Yokoi Sensei is on Sunday, April 23 from 3:30pm to 4:00pm at Ernguul Park.
Ikebana Artist, Ms. Koen Yokoi, a diver and repeat visitor to Palau, will be sharing her expertise through the Ikebana workshop on Saturday, April 22, 2017 from 9:00am to 11:00am, and in the afternoon from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. The morning session participants will learn about the Art of Ikebana. In the afternoon session participants will learn about the Art of Japanese Rock Garden.
On Sunday, April 23, 2017, there will be an Ikebana “Flower Arrangement” contest at Ernguul Park and will be open to the public. Contestants must prepare their flower arrangement work at home using local materials including the flower vase. Ikebana works for the contest will be accepted between 1:30pm and 2:00pm on Sunday, April 23. Judging will be based on the design, creativity, conformance with the contest rules and theme, and the overall beauty of the submitted work. Interested participants may contact the Embassy of Japan or Belau Tourism Association to register and for the contest rules. Prizes will be awarded to the top three contestants.
