Pacific Partnership 2016 in Palau

1. From July 28 to August 15, 2016, the Japan Self Defense Forces and its counterparts from the USA, the UK and Australia conducted humanitarian assistance activities in Palau as part of Pacific Partnership 2016 operations. In fact, it was the first ever Japan led operation. Basic statistics of the operation can be seen as follows.

◆ Koror Elementary School:Painting on the Gym and classroom roofs, Fixing a classroom
◆ Palau High School:Painting 1 classroom and 5 summerhouses
◆ Belau National Hospital :Installing 27 door closers and fixing doors

[Cultural exchange]
◆ August 10 in Koror:About 120 people participated
(Handing over ceremony of Judo uniforms and tatami-mats as Sports For Tomorrow initiative)
◆ August 13 in Peleliu:About 80 people participated

◆ Joint War Memorial Service on August 13 in Peleliu
◆ Reception on the LST SHIMOKITA on August 8
◆ Ship Tour:5 times for 104 people in total
◆ Voluntary cleanup in Koror and Peleliu
◆ Bringing “Vision Van (Eye clinical vehicle) for eye check from Japan
◆ Military and civilian combined medical team
◆ LCAC (Hover craft) for personnel and material transport

2. With tireless efforts of medical team and Palauan counterparts, in totak more than 1,800 patients were treated. Significantly, 38 cataract surgeries on the LST SHIMOKITA were made possible by combined efforts of the Japan Self Defense Forces and Japanese civilian medical NGOs. “Vision Van” also played a central role for eye checks.

3. In engineering, 2 schools and the Belau National Hospital benefited from roof painting, frame painting on the gym and doors fixing. All were made possible by the Japan Self Defense Forces, CAT team of the USA and Palauan counterparts.

4. For cultural exchange, Kendo (Japanese sword martial arts) performance, Japanese traditional craft experience such as Kendama, Taketombo and Origami, Judo practice and a handing over ceremony of Judo uniforms and tatami-mats were taken place. The Judo uniforms and tatami-mats were donated by the Japanese NPO called “Solidarity of International JUDO Education.”

5. Another significant moment of the operation was the Joint War Memorial Service in Peleliu. It was the first opportunity for the Japan Self Defense Forces to conduct a service in Peleliu since after World WarII.

6. Ministry of Defense and the Japan Self Defense Forces as well as participating members for the Pacific Partnership 2016 in Palau would like to express their sincere appreciation to the officials of the Government of Palau, Palauan counterparts and the general public in Palau for their kind acceptance and all assistance to the operations.

7. The Government of Japan also would like to extend its appreciation to all relevant stakeholders for the operation and believes that this unique opportunity has expanded mutual understanding and enhanced further friendships between Japan and Palau.
