JET Programme

Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme

The Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme seeks to enhance internationalism in Japan by promoting mutual understanding between the people of Japan and those of other nations. Towards this end, the JET programme offer its participants the opportunity to serve in Japanese local authorities as well as public and private elementary, junior high and senior high schools in Japan as Assistant English Language Teachers.

 The Programme is conducted by local authorities and other organisations of Japan in cooperation with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, and the Council of Local Authorities for International Relations. 

1. Duties as ALT

Assisting in classes taught by Japanese foreign language teachers, preparation of teaching materials, assist in the language training of Japanese teachers, engage in local international exchange activities, among others. 

Ultimately, an ATL will be asked to serve as a cultural ambassador by sharing their own culture with the members of the community to further promote mutual understanding.

2. Requirements

(1)Be interested in Japan, and be willing to deepen their knowledge and appreciation of Japan after their arrival. Make effort to study or continue studying the Japanese language prior to and after arriving in Japan. Be motivated to participate in and initiate international exchange activities in the local community.

(2)Hold at least a Bachelor's degree or obtain such qualifications by the designated departure date. (alternatively hold a certification of completion of a three-year course to teach at primary/elementary or secondary schools or obtain such qualification by the designated departure date.)

(3)Have excellent pronunciation, rhythm, intonation and voice projection skills in English. Have good writing skills and grammar usage.

(4)Be a national and permanent resident of Palau.

3. Term Of Contract

In principle, appointments are for one year and commence on the day after the date of the participant’s arrival in Japan. 

4. Remuneration

Approximately $28,340 / Year (3,360,000JPY)  (Note: USD based on exchange rate of ¥ 118.53 to $ 1USD as of January 25, 2016)

-from college or university. If you have not graduated yet, you must submit a certificate of expected date of graduation or proof of current attendance in a degree course.
