◆Japan Hands Over Heavy Equipments to Peleliu State

   On Tuesday, January 20, 2015, Ambassador of Japan Kazuhiro Tajiri formally handed over four heavy equipments to Peleliu State. The handing over ceremony for “The Project for Procurement of Road Repairing Equipment to Peleliu State” was held at Peleliu. The ceremony was attended by Governor Temmy Shmull and Peleliu residents.

   Through Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP), 1 excavator, 1 loader, 1 lifter and 1 dump truck was purchased in the total cost of $53,107.

   Roads of Peleliu State have extensively deteriorated over time, with potholes which have been affecting the potential safety of pedestrians as well as vehicles and drivers. Accordingly, by the newly provided equipments, the state government will now be able to transport materials to sites and fill up potholes and level uneven parts of roads to smooth out the surface. Having the condition of roads improved, it is expected that not only the residents, but also the increasing number of tourists visiting the state would also benefit.

   In his remarks in the ceremony, Ambassador Tajiri stated that he hopes that the purchased equipments will be effectively used and that it would contribute to enhance the potential safety of Peleliu residents and its visitors. Furthermore, he added that he anticipates the equipments granted to be well maintained and be in use for a long period of time. The handed over equipments are expected to contribute to further development of Peleliu State and its residents.

◆Japan’s GGP Grant to Peleliu State Signed

   On Wednesday, December 3, 2014, Ambassador of Japan Kazuhiro Tajiri and Governor of Peleliu State Temmy Shmull signed a contract of the grant to assist road repairing in Peleliu through Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP). The signing ceremony was held at the Ambassador’s residence and was witnessed by President Tommy E. Remengesau Jr., Minister of State Billy Kuartei and other government officials.

   Through “The Project for Procurement of Road Repairing Equipment to Peleliu State” valued at $53,107, 1 excavator, 1 loader, 1 lifter and 1 dump truck will be granted to the state.

   Peleliu State and its residents have long been concerned with deteriorated road with potholes throughout the island. By the road repairing equipments granted, it is expected that the roads will be smoothed out and people in Peleliu will have an easier and safer access to the roads. By the road condition improved, it is expected that not only the residents, but also the increasing number of tourist visiting the state would also benefit.

   The Government of Japan launched GGP in 1999, for the purpose of responding to various development needs engaged in grassroots activities in Palau. As of December 3, 2014, the Embassy has signed 55 grant contracts with schools and hospitals as well as state governments and non-profit organizations.
