◆Japan’s GGP Grant to Ngiwal State
On Thursday, January 21, 2016, Ambassador of Japan Kazuhiro Tajiri and Governor of Ngiwal State Ellender Ngirameketii signed the grant contract for “The Project for Construction of Multipurpose Center for Ngiwal State”, valued $130,319 under the Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP). The signing ceremony was held at the State Office in Ngiwal and was witnessed by Presidential Chief of Staff Secilil Eldebechel, Director of Foreign Affairs and Trade Gustav Aitaro, Chief, Protocol Office Danny Higa, Chiefs and related personnel.
Ngiwal State suffered from a heavy damage caused by typhoon Bopha, and has begun relocation of houses to a higher point. Therefore, in order for the people of Ngiwal to gather and actively participate in community events and activities in a secure environment, the multipurpose center will be constructed in the center of relocation area through the GGP grant.
The constructed center is expected to be used daily for various community events and gatherings, as well as allowing children to come and study after school. Furthermore, it will also function as an emergency shelter for the residents of Ngiwal to evacuate in cases of natural disasters or any other emergencies.
Accordingly, as an outcome of the project, it is anticipated that the multipurpose center will be used by the community members fully, as well as to ensure people’s safety as a shelter in case of emergencies. In his remarks at the ceremony, Ambassador Tajiri stated his hope that the implementation of this project would lead to further development of Ngiwal State.
The Government of Japan launched GGP in 1999, for the purpose of responding to various development needs engaged in grassroots activities in Palau. As of January 21, 2016, the Embassy has signed 59 grant contracts with schools and hospitals as well as state governments and non-profit organizations. Education, health care and environment are the primary fields prioritized by Japan and its GGP. For further information about GGP, please contact 488-6455.
