◆Mr. Elbuchel Sadang Attended International Conference in Japan
Upon the invitation by the Japanese Ministry of the Environment and Okinawa Prefecture, former Executive Director of Palau Conservation Society (Minister of Finance) Elbuchel Sadang attended the symposium “International Conference on Climate Change and Coral Reef Conservation,” which was held in Okinawa for two days, June 29 and 30. The objective of the conference was to think about a sustainable island keeping in harmony with environment while presenting cases of Okinawa and Pacific islands as a region with a unique island ecosystem. Mr. Sadang took part in a panel discussion on the first day and contributed to the discussion under the theme of “island in symbiosis with nature, how an island country should be” and “thinking about preventing global warming and protecting coral reefs.”
Also during the conference, Japanese Minister of the Environment Nobuteru Ishihara announced the “Comprehensive Support for Island Countries” to provide inclusive support for adaptation to climate change, global warming mitigation measures, and other environmental measures such as waste management and water treatment. Minister Ishihara is also Chairman of the Japan-Palau Parliamentary Friendship League.
More than 700 people from 14 different countries attended the symposium, including Dr. Mariyam Shakeela, Minister of Environment and Energy of the Republic of Maldives, Dr. Rajendra K. Pachauri, Chair of the IPCC and Mr. Shiro Wakui, Professor at Tokyo City University. Mr. Yimnang Golbuu, Palau International Coral Reef Center CEO, also participated in a panel discussion on coral reef conservation.
The conference, which was covered by the Japanese media including NHK, Japan’s major TV station, brought many people’s attention to renewed cooperation between Japan and Palau as well as other Pacific island countries facing serious environmental issues such as global warming and coral reef conservation.
