In his remarks, Ambassador Tajiri stated that the new machineries were procured to replace the old dental facilities which have been limiting the services provided to the patients. He added, “By following what you had learned through the training, I hope all the machineries and equipment will be well maintained and taken care of, in order to serve at this hospital for a long period of time.”
Ambassador Tajiri also expressed hope and anticipation that the patients on the long waiting lists could receive the treatment sooner and more comfortably than before, and that the project would lead to further development of medical services in Palau.

On Wednesday, March 4, 2015, Ambassador of Japan Kazuhiro Tajiri and Acting Director of Bureau of Public Health Sherylinn Madraisau signed documents formally officializing “The Project for Procurement of Dental Unit for Belau National Hospital”. The signing ceremony was held at Belau National Hospital (BNH) and was witnessed by Minister of Health Gregorio Ngirmang, First Lady Debbie Remengesau, Chief of Staff of President’s Office Cecilil Eldebechel, Senator Mason Whipps, Director of Bureau of Hospital and Clinical Services Dr. Debbie Ngemaes and related BNH staff.
The grant officialized is valued at $120,613 and is offered through Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP). Through the project, two brand new dental chair units, dental instruments, maintenance materials will be procured and trainings will be implemented by a Japanese manufacturer.
Dental clinic at BNH has been facing concerns of a long waiting list of patients for a long period of time. One of the key factors to this issue was the insufficient condition of the machineries and equipments the clinic has been using for over twenty years. However, by the new machineries and equipments installed, it is expected that clinic staff will be able to provide a treatment with satisfactory dental units, whereas patients will be able to receive the treatment sooner.
In his remarks at the ceremony, Ambassador Tajiri emphasized the importance of maintenance, in order for the granted dental units to serve at BNH for a long period of time. Moreover, he stated his hope that the implementation of this project would lead to further development of medical services in Palau.
The Government of Japan launched GGP in 1999, for the purpose of responding to various development needs engaged in grassroots activities in Palau. As of March 4, 2015, the Embassy has signed 57 grant contracts with schools and hospitals as well as state governments and non-profit organizations. Education, health care and environment are the primary fields prioritized by Japan and its GGP. For further information about GGP, please contact 488-6455.
