◆Japan’s GGP Grant for Belau National Hospital Signed

On Thursday, October 3, 2013, Ambassador of Japan Kazuhiro Tajiri and the Acting Director of Bureau of Hospital and Clinical Services Dr. Yuriko Bechesrrak signed documents formally officializing a grant to procure 11 brand new neonatal machineries for Belau National Hospital (BNH). The 11 neonatal machineries to be procured are infant care center; infant incubator; phototherapy unit; neonatal laryngoscope; pediatric laryngoscope; suction unit; infant oxygen hood; neonatal blood pressure cuff; infant blood pressure cuff; neonatal weight scale and neonatal measuring scale. The signing ceremony was held at the Embassy of Japan in Ngerekebesang and was attended by Minister of Health Gregorio Ngirmang, Senator Raynold Oilouch, Senator Philip Reklai and BNH workers.
The grant officialized is valued at $ 101,406 and is offered through Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP). The neonatal machineries currently owned by BNH have been in use for over 20 years and have become deteriorated. Furthermore, lack of quantity has also become an issue in the OBGYN ward.
Having an average of 250 babies born every year, the nationality of new born babies varies not only to Palau but also to the Philippines, Japan and many other countries. By procuring the 11 new neonatal machineries from Japan, it is expected that the machineries will contribute to the safe delivery of babies and improve the OBGYN services provided at BNH.
The Government of Japan launched GGP in 1999, for the purpose of responding to various development needs engaged in grassroots activities in Palau. As of October 3, 2013, the Embassy has signed 46 grant contracts with schools and hospitals as well as state governments and non-profit organizations. Education, Health Care and Environment are the primary fields prioritized by Japan and its GGP.
