◆Japan’s GGP Grant to Renovate Belau Modekngei School Dormitories Signed
On Tuesday, March 18th, 2014, Chargé d’Affaires of Embassy of Japan Takao Anzawa and Principal of Belau Modekngei School (BMS) Bedbii Chokai signed the contract of the grant to assist BMS through Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots and Human Security Projects (GGP). The signing ceremony was held at the Embassy of Japan in Ngerekebesang and was witnessed by BMS Board members.
“The Project for Renovation of Belau Modekngei School Dormitories”, valued at $121,076, will renovate the school dormitories and bathrooms that have been built more than 20 years ago. The facilities have been facing remarkable deterioration in the past years and are in great need of renovation and repairs. Through this project, 10 dormitories will have their deteriorated roofs and floors replaced. Furthermore, built-in lockers will be newly furnished, in order to provide students more space in each dorm. Moreover, existing 3 bathrooms will be renovated, and 1 new bathroom will be constructed to accommodate all the students who live on campus more efficiently.
Accordingly, by implementation of this project, the renovated facilities will enable students to acquire secure and healthy environment. It is expected that such sufficient environment will inspire the students to concentrate in the academics and to enjoy their school lives even more.
The Government of Japan launched GGP in 1999, for the purpose of responding to various development needs engaged in grassroots activities in Palau. As of March 18, 2014, the Embassy has signed 52 grant contracts with schools and hospitals as well as state governments and non-profit organizations. Education, health care and environment are the primary fields prioritized by Japan and its GGP.


◆Japan Hands Over Renovated School Dormitories and New Bathrooms to Belau Modekngei School
On Wednesday, August 13, 2014, Ambassador of Japan Kazuhiro Tajiri formally handed over the renovated school dormitories and bathrooms to Belau Modekngei School (BMS). The handing over ceremony for “The Project for Renovation of Belau Modekngei School Dormitories” was held at BMS in Ibobang, Ngatpang State. The ceremony was attended by First Lady Debbie Remengesau, Minister of Education Sinton Soalablai, Governor of Ngatpang State Francesca Otong, School Board members, teachers, students and parents of BMS.
Through Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP), the project was granted to BMS in the total cost of $121,076. Through the implementation of this project, 10 existing dormitories had their deteriorated roofs and floors fully replaced. Furthermore, built-in lockers were newly furnished, in order to provide students more space in each dorms. Moreover, existing 3 bathrooms were renovated, as well as 1 new bathroom constructed to accommodate all the students more efficiently.
Having built more than 20 years ago, BMS dormitories and bathrooms were facing remarkable deterioration in the past years, which were in great need of renovation and repairs. Therefore, by utilizing the new facilities, BMS students are expected to acquire safe, healthy and satisfactory environment. Furthermore, it is expected that the handed over facilities will inspire the students to concentrate in the academics and to enjoy their new school year beginning today.

This is the third GGP implemented in BMS, followed by the project for improving vocational programs in 2005; and procurement of school bus in 2011. As of August 13, 2014, the Embassy has signed 53 grant contracts with schools and hospitals as well as state governments and non-profit organizations.
