Embassy of Japan in Palau
Two students from Palau Community College (PCC) will participate in a short-term academic programme at Sophia University in Japan from 4 to 30 January 2016.
Ms. Tyra Asanuma, a second-year student in Information Technology, and Ms. Mengiau Sasao, a second-year student in STEM disciplines, have been granted the opportunity to attend the January session in Japanese studies at Sophia University and study in depth the key aspects of contemporary Japan. This opportunity was offered by the Association for Promotion of International Cooperation (APIC), a Japanese general incorporated foundation dedicated to strengthening the cooperation and mutual understanding between Japan and other countries. APIC has launched the “Pacific Islands and West Indies Student Invitation Project”, which will sponsor students from the Pacific Islands and the West Indies to attend short academic courses in Japan. Ms. Asanuma and Ms. Sasao are the first Palauan students selected for this initiative.

Ms. Asanuma said: "I am so grateful to APIC and the Embassy of Japan in Palau for giving me the opportunity to attend Sophia University. I am so excited and I can't wait to meet new people and learn more about Japan."

Ms. Sasao said: "I am honored to have been chosen to participate in the Programme, and I thank APIC and the Embassy of Japan for giving me this once in a lifetime opportunity to study in a different setting and to experience something I have never done before. This gives me a chance to venture out and learn new things with other Sophia University students. I am thankful for this opportunity."
The Embassy of Japan is delighted to partner with APIC and PCC for this project. We always seeking ways to encourage more Palauan students to come and study in Japan. The Government of Japan offers scholarship opportunities for talented and motivated Palauan students and sponsors a variety of cultural exchange programme, such as JENESYS (Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths). We hope that these initiatives will inspire a new generation of globally-minded students and take the Japan-Palau partnership forward.
