◆Japanese Prime Minister’s Special Envoy Attends Independence Day Ceremony

   In commemoration of Palau’s 19th Independence Day, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe sent the Honorable Minoru Kiuchi to Palau as his Special Envoy. Hon. Kiuchi is the former Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan.

   Hon. Kiuchi visited Palau from September 30th to October 2nd and delivered Prime Minister Abe’s congratulatory message for the Independence Day Ceremony. In his message, Prime Minister Abe congratulated Palau on its 19th Independence Day and President Remengesau on his re-election and assured his utmost efforts to further strengthen the cordial and friendly relationship that Japan and Palau have enjoyed over the years.

   Following the Ceremony, Hon. Kiuchi attended a luncheon hosted by President Remengesau, then later had bilateral talks with President Remengesau, President Mori of FSM, President Loeak of RMI and Minister of State Kuartei. During the bilateral talks with each respective president, discussions focused on international and regional issues and the further strengthening of the bilateral relationships shared between Japan and each country.

   During his stay, Hon. Kiuchi also paid a floral tribute at the naval cemetery for Japanese former residents and visited the Palau International Coral Reef Center. Upon his departure to Japan, Hon. Kiuchi expressed his wish to visit this beautiful Palau again.
