◆Emergency Relief Goods for Typhoon Bopha Recovery arriving from Japan

Blanket Water Purifier Portable Jerry Can

The Government of Japan decided on December 13th to provide through Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), emergency relief goods amounting 5 million JPY (approximately 60,000 USD) in total to the Government of the Republic of Palau for the recovery of damages from Typhoon Bopha. The items include 156 portable jerry cans, 20 sets of water purifiers, 100 sets of blankets and 6 twenty meter rolls of plastic sheets. The items were selected by the Bopha Relief Committee and Palau Red Cross to meet the needs of the victims of the typhoon, especially those who have lost their homes.

The water purifier is able to produce 4 liters (about 1 gallon) of potable water per minute. It eliminates bacteria, protozoa, cysts, algae, spores, sediments and viruses in combination with particles bigger than 0.2 microns and reduces radioactive particles. The portable jerry cans are semi-collapsible containers specifically made for drinking water and can contain 10 liters (over 2 gallons) of water. Blankets are in the size of 200 cm by 150 cm (about 7’x5’) and made of wool and synthetic fiber. The plastic sheets are highly durable and could be used multi-purposely.

The emergency relief goods are expected to arrive to Palau on the evening of December 15 and will be distributed to the disaster victims immediately through the Typhoon Bopha Recovery Committee and Palau Red Cross. The Government of Japan decided to extend this aid from a humanitarian point of view based on the long history of friendly relationship between Palau and Japan. Japan received over 30,000 USD of donation from Palau through Palau Red Cross when the Great East Japan Earthquake occurred.

Currently, staff of the Embassy of Japan including Counsellor Takao Anzawa and Economic Researcher Naoko Hayashi and GGP Coordinator Hisayo Takenaka are visiting the worst affected states around the country to seek other forms of assistance to make, such as through the Grant Assistance for Grassroots and Human Security Projects (GGP) which allows funding up to 120,000 USD per development project. They have visited the states of Ngaraard, Melekeok and Ngiwal, Peleliu and Angaur.
