◆Japan’s GGP Grant for Bethania High School Gym

On Wednesday, September 26, 2012, Japan Ambassador Yoshiyuki Sadaoka and Bethania High School (BHS) Principal Marcellus Ngiraingas officialized a grant to construct a new gym for the school. The signing ceremony was held at the Embassy of Japan in Ngerekebesang and was attended by the Director of the Bureau of Education Administration, Mr. Emery Wenty, the acting Chief of Personnel, Mr. Phillip Haruo, President of Evangelical Church in Palau, Pastor Billy Kuartei, Vice-Chairman of School Board, Pastor Hiob Ngirachemoi, President of BHS Alumni Association, Ms. Esther Koshiba and BHS staff, Mr. Morimatz Kingzio.

The grant officialized is valued at $120,459 and is offered through Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project (GGP). The construction of the BHS gym will ensure PE classes and other sport activities regardless of extreme heat or rain, and will further promote good health amongst students and school staff. The gym will also provide a venue for BHS during school and community activities or functions. The project will benefit students and staff at BHS and the approximately 400 people living in Ngaraard.

GGP funded a multipurpose building for Koror Elementary School (KES) in 2006 and is now funding the reconstruction of Palau Mission Academy’s (PMA) gym and the construction of Airai Elementary School’s (AES) gym. The multipurpose building at KES has contributed to the school and its respective community, and it is hoped that the PMA, AES and BHS gyms will also contribute to the schools and their communities.
