◆Japan Donates Bus to Melekeok Elementary School

(Ambassador handed over the key of
the bus to principals)

On Friday, September 7, 2012, Japan Ambassador Yoshiyuki Sadaoka formally handed over a brand new 30-seat microbus for Melekeok Elementary School (MES) to its Principals, Ms. MagariaTellei and Mr. Bill Recheluul. The handover ceremony was held at the MES campus and was attended by the Minister of the Ministry of Education, Mr. Masa-Aki Emesiochl, the Director of the Bureau of Education Administration, Mr. Emery Wenty, the Chief of Research and Evaluation, Mr. Raynold Mechol, the acting Chief of Personnel, Mr. Phillip Haruo, the acting Chief of School Management, Mr. Yutaka Gibbons Jr., the Chairman of the Melekeok Elementary School Parents Teachers Association, Mr. Henaro Polloi, and Melekeok Parents Representative, Mr. Ray Ongino.

The bus donated was purchased through a Japan’s Grassroots for Human Security Project (GGP) grant and had a total cost of $96,792. The August 2011 consolidation of Ngchesar, Melekeok, and Ngiwal Elementary Schools further necessitated reliable student transportation and prompted the Government of Japan to donate the bus. The Melekeok bus is the third bus donated by Japan through GGP after bus donations to Peliliu in 1999 and Aimeliik in 2010. The procurement of a fourth bus for Belau Modekngei School is in progress and is expected to be handed over later this year. Education is one of the primary fields prioritized by Japan and its grant programs like GGP.
