◆$22M Grant for Aimeliik Generators from Japan Signed

On June 27, Ambassador Yoshiyuki Sadaoka and President of the Republic of Palau Johnson Toribiong signed and exchanged notes to formalize the provision of two 5 MW generators to Aimeliik Power Plant as a grant from the Government of Japan. The grant aid is worth approximately $22 million USD and is provided to stabilize the power situation in Palau.

Just last month, Japan handed over four emergency generators to Malakal Power Plant to support Palau to overcome the power crisis that was caused by the catastrophic fire at the Aimeliik Power Plant. Stabilization of the power situation in Palau is one of the focus areas of Japan’s development assistance to Palau. Besides the generators, the Government of Japan is also dispatching a technical expert to PPUC for the last three years.

At the ceremony, Ambassador Sadaoka mentioned that since 2009, the Government of Japan has provided about $30 million USD worth of denki related grants and technical assistance. This includes these two 5 mega-watt generators, the recent 4 emergency generators, solar panels at the airport, the Malakal Power Plant generators’ spare parts, and dispatch of technical experts. This number shows Japan’s strong commitment to support Palau and contribute to the improvement of the lives of people in Palau.
