◆Japan's GGP hands over new facilities to Koror Elementary School
On Monday, March 11, 2013, Japan Ambassador Yoshiyuki Sadaoka formally handed over to Koror Elementary School (KES) its expanded library and newly constructed science lab and conference/teachers room. The handover ceremony was held at the KES campus and was attended by by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Youth and Social Welfare, Senator Raynold B. Oilouch, the Chairman of Senate Committee on Tourism Development and Culture, Senator Phillip Reklai, the Director of the Bureau of Education Administration, Director Emery Wenty, the Chief of School Management, Chief Sinton Soalablai, KES Principal Andrew Tabelual, and KES Parents Teachers Association Chairman, Mr. Harry Fritz.
KES’s library expansion and science lab and conference/ teachers room constructions had a total cost of $101,800 and were funded through Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project (GGP). The grant project intends to improve the learning environment at KES. The expansion of the library will now ensure a larger studying environment and the improved accessibility of more students to the library. KES will also now have a safe environment specifically designated for science experiments and hands-on learning, which will ultimately lead to better science education at KES. The conference/teachers room will serve as a venue for KES teachers in their capacity building and will lead to higher quality of education at KES.
KES applied for this grant project twice. After having their first application rejected, KES displayed great tenacity and passion by resubmitting another application for the same project. Their persistence paid off with the project’s approval and leaves us with a story of perseverance that we can all learn from, especially for potential GGP Grant applicants.
