◆Japan’s GGP Grant for Airai Elementary School Signed

On Wednesday, March 14, 2012, Japan Ambassador Yoshiyuki Sadaoka and Airai Elementary School (AES) Principal Aileen Mikel officialized a grant to construct a new gym for the school. The signing ceremony was held at the Embassy of Japan in Ngerekebesang and was attended by Chief of School Management Sinton Soalablai and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Volunteer Mr. KengoYoshizawa. Mr. Yoshizawa is AES’s math and physical education (PE) teacher and helped school with application for this grant.

The grant officialized is valued at $98,095 and is offered through Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project (GGP). The construction of the AES gym will ensure PE classes and other sport activities are not hindered by extreme heat or rain, and will further promote good health amongst students and school staff. The gym will also provide a venue for AES during school and community activities or functions. The project will benefit the 146 students at AES and the approximately 3,000 people living in Airai.

GGP funded a multipurpose building for Koror Elementary School (KES) in 2006 and is now funding the reconstruction of Palau Mission Academy’s (PMA) gymnasium. The multipurpose building at KES has contributed to the school and its respective community, and it is hoped that the PMA and AES gyms will also contribute to the schools and their communities. This marks the first time AES has received a GGP grant.
