◆Japan-Palau Summit Meeting

   On February 15, for about 30 minutes from 11:30 a.m., Prime Minister Abe held a bilateral meeting at the Office of the Prime Minister with H.E. Tommy E. Remengesau, Jr., President of the Republic of Palau. The following is an overview of the bilateral meeting

1. At the outset of the meeting, Prime Minister Abe congratulated the inauguration of President Remengesau, extended his sympathy to the people affected by typhoon in December 2012, and also conveyed appreciation to the heart-warming support Japan received from the government and people of Palau in face of the Great East Japan Earthquake.

2. Both leaders agreed that Japan and Palau will further reinforce bilateral relations reflecting the strong historical ties. President Remengesau expressed his willingness to cooperate with the recovery of remains of Japanese war dead and the second PALM Ministerial Interim Meeting scheduled in this Autumn. Prime Minister Abe noted that Japan will steadily implement the commitment Japan expressed at PALM 6 meeting in last May. Prime Minister also stressed that in the field of people to people exchange, Japan will further accelerate exchange among young generation, and it is planning to invite Palauan youth to Japan through ‘JENNESYS 2.0’.

3. Both leaders confirmed that within the rapidly changing strategic environment of Asia-Pacific region, Japan and Palau will closely cooperate with each other. In particular, it is agreed that nuclear tests and the missile launch by North Korea are common concerns for the region and international community. President Remengesau also supported Japan’s position on the abduction issue.
