◆Japan Donates Bus to Emmaus High School

On Thursday, January 24, 2013, Japan Ambassador Yoshiyuki Sadaoka formally handed over a brand new 30 seat NISSAN microbus for Emmaus High School (EHS) to its Principal Sione Fakatou. The signing ceremony was held at the EHS cafeteria and was witnessed by Ministry of Education (MOE) Director Emery Wenty, MOE Chief Sinton Soalablai, MOE Acting Chief Phillip Haruo, and invited guest, Koror Elementary School Principal Andrew Tabelual. Attendants from EHS included Board Member Ms. Esther Koshiba, Pastor Billy Kuartei, Pastor Hiob Ngirachemoi, Parent Representatives Elbuchel Sadang and Prima Kual, and the EHS student body.

The bus donated was purchased through a Japan’s Grassroots for Human Security Project (GGP) grant and had a total cost of $95,685. EHS lacks a means for student transportation, which has hindered student activities, especially in cases where EHS is unable to borrow a bus. The bus procured will now ensure that EHS can attend any extracurricular activity without transportation challenges. The EHS bus will be the fifth school bus donated by Japan through GGP after bus donations to Peleliu in 1999, Aimeliik in 2010, and Melekeok and Belau Modekngei School last year. Education is one of the primary fields prioritized by Japan and its grant programs like GGP.
